This is a beautiful and provocative film, perhaps a bit too provocative. I didn't really want to see a couple of the scenes, but I believe they achieved the horrifying effect that they were intended to, which is an accomplishment given that I am often a jaded viewer. Dafoe and Gainsbourg both give fantastic performances, but the real star is the wondeful cinematography and the creative way the narrative unfolds. While it misses some conventional points, it excels in artistry and emotion.
